Dothan, the “Peanut Capitol of the World,” processes a large portion of the U.S. peanut crop. Peanut-themed attractions can be found throughout town including a giant gold peanut sculpture at the Visitor’s Information Center, “Peanuts Around Town,” which consists of five foot tall peanut sculptures scattered throughout the town and decorated by local artists to represent various personalities such as “Wise ‘Ol Nut,” “Shoppin’ Nut,” and even the “Elvis Nut.” The National Peanut Festival takes place in the Fall and features a midway, nationally-known recording artists, and the largest parade in the area. The Wiregrass Festival of Murals features murals painted on various buildings downtown by nationally and internationall know artists, highlighting early scenes of local and state history. One of the murals features Dr. George Washington Carver, who invented more than 600 uses for the peanut and aided area farmers in saving their crops. However, Dothan isn’t just about peanuts. Dothan is home to the World’s smallest city block, a small triangle of land with only a street sign, yield sign, and stop sign. There is the Army Aviation Museum with aeronautical exhibits, military airplanes, helicopters, and themed gift shop. The Dothan area Botanical gardens offers a paved nature trail which rambles through roses, daylilies, camellias, and azaleas, and features a gazebo and demonstration garden. Christmas City is a seasonal theme park that features animated scenes of Christmas enhancing a mile long drive-through light panorama. Recreational facilities include Westgate Park and Water World, Solomon Park in the Garden District, Adventureland Theme Park, Marias Vineyard, the Highland Oaks Golf Course, and the Wiregrass BMX Race Track.
